potential! Job Summary and Qualifications POSITION SUMMARY: A
Sonographer is a diagnostic ultrasound professional who is
qualified by professional credentialing, academic, and clinical
experience to provide diagnostic patient care services using
ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice
of the diagnostic medical sonographer includes those procedures,
acts, and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has
received education and clinical experience. This person must
demonstrate competency and has completed the appropriate ARDMS
certification(s) which is the standard of practice in ultrasound.
Participates in providing patient specific care standards as
directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high
levels of patient satisfaction. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Responsibilities - Demonstrates expertise in providing
patient care by identifying correct patient identification and that
the requested procedure correlates with the patient’s clinical
history; utilizing appropriate interviewing and assessment skills
to obtain relevant information. - Uses interviewing techniques to
gather relevant information from the patient or patient’s
representative along with the medical records to accurately reveal
the health status and medical history. - Assesses the patient’s
ability to tolerate procedures and demonstrates a thorough
knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and positioning. Positions the
patient in a proficient and caring manner to obtain and facilitate
the desired results as specified by diagnosis. - Communicates with
the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient’s ability to
understand. Presents explanations and instructions in a manner
which can be easily understood by the patient and other health care
providers; responds appropriately to patient’s questions and
concerns and modifies exams as necessary. - Refers specific
diagnostic, treatment or prognosis questions to the patient’s
physician. - Implements a procedure plan that falls within
established protocols. - Initiates first aid in emergency
situations, as required by practice policy. Notifies an appropriate
health provider when immediate medical attention is necessary. -
Requests the assistance of additional personnel, when warranted. -
Recognizes sonographic characteristics of normal and abnormal
tissues, structures, and blood flow; adjusts scanning technique to
optimize image quality and spectral waveform characteristics;
analyzes sonography findings throughout the course of the
examination so that a comprehensive exam is completed and
sufficient data is provided to the physician; performs measurements
and calculations according to practice protocol ; strives to
minimize patient exposure to acoustic energy without compromising
examination quality and/or completeness. - Establishes that the
examination, as performed, complies with applicable protocols and
guidelines. - Documents clearly, concisely, and completely as well
as documenting diagnostic and patient data in the appropriate
record, according to established policy and procedure. - Records
diagnostic images and data for use by the interpreting provider. -
Initiates additional scanning techniques as indicated by the
examination and uses professional judgment to adapt to the
procedure plan for optimal results. - Initiates first aid in
emergency situations as required by practice policy and notifies an
appropriate health provider when immediate medical attention is
necessary. - Evaluates the patient's physical and mental status
prior to discharge from the ultrasound room. - Upon assessment of
the examination findings, recognizes the need for an urgent rather
than routine report and takes appropriate action. - Documents
diagnostic and patient data in the appropriate record, according to
established policy and procedure. - Records diagnostic images and
data for use by the interpreting physician. - Adheres to
established policy and procedural guidelines and adheres to the
accepted professional ethical standards. - Works in partnership
with the physician and other staff to provide the best care
possible for all patients, maintaining an attitude of service and
excellence. - Maintains knowledge in own field of expertise;
participates in continuing education activities through
professional societies and organizations to enhance knowledge,
skills, and performance; shares knowledge with colleagues,
students, and all members of the health care team. - Maintains a
clean, organized, and safe working environment at all times. - Is
accountable for professional judgments and decisions. - Functions
within the legal and ethical boundaries established by the
industry's professional standards; the American Institute of
Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM) standards and within the scope of state
and federal licensure regulations. - Utilizes clinical knowledge,
technical expertise, and critical thinking skills to safely perform
tests and procedures requiring comparable skills and experience
according to approved protocols, guidelines, policies, and
procedures. - Well versed on medical practices, use of medical
terminology, and obstetric conditions. - Demonstrates effective use
of the GE Viewpoint medical reporting system - Demonstrates
effective use of policies and procedures. - Demonstrates effective
problem solving and decision making skills; demonstrates effective
organizational and critical thinking skills. - Demonstrates
effective time management skills including priority setting. -
Demonstrates effective customer service skills. - Utilizes

appropriately handling stressful or difficult situations. - Adheres

duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Required: This
employee is responsible for the independent operation of diagnostic
medical equipment to expose various OB/GYN conditions, and for
performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations
using sonography. Sonography or ultrasonography is the use of sound
waves to generate an image for assessment and diagnosis. This
position will specialize in perinatal sonography. Ultrasound
examinations include a variety of conditions ranging from routine
OB/GYN to high risk obstetrical scans to include but not limited
to, nuchal translucency, fetal anatomy survey, Doppler studies,
biophysical profile, fetal echocardiograms and endo vaginal scans.
Experience also includes ability to perform guidance for
amniocentesis, chronic villus sampling, and other procedures
commonly performed in a MFM program. This person must be able to
work independently and as a part of a team as well have thorough
knowledge of high risk conditions. The sonographer is responsible
for daily operations of the sonographic program, patient schedule,
equipment maintenance, report of equipment failures, and quality
assessment (QA).Must be customer oriented to provide exceptional
services to patients, physicians, visitors, and co-workers.
Maintains awareness of patient privacy (HIPAA), confidentiality,
and dignity at all times. Must be able to demonstrate understanding
of national patient safety initiatives by strict compliance to all
safety protocols and procedures as required by both HCA and St.
David’s North Austin Medical Center. Preferred: Computer skills,
previous experience in applicable field EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required: Graduate of an educational program in Diagnostic Medical
Sonography or minimum one-year obstetrics (OB) experience.
Preferred: Associates Degree or higher in related technological
field. One-year previous experience as an MFM Sonographer. LICENSES
AND CERTIFICATES: Required: - Credentials with the American
Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) - Current
certification with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical
Sonography (ARDMS) registered in OB within one year of hire. - BLS
certification as per SDH policy Preferred: Fetal Echocardiography
(FE) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical
Sonographers (ARDMS) within two years of hire. If results are not
available at two year mark due to ARDMS results waiting period,
employee will be allowed to work until results become available.
