Engineer Reports To: Superintendent / Project Manager / Operations
Manager Position Summary: The Field Engineer plays a key role in
supporting project crews with accurate layout and facilitates
project startup. He/she collaborates with our BIM Design Manger and
project managers to modify, manage, and prepare CAD files, points
files, and control maps. This position ensures our field crews are
properly equipped to begin layout with precision and efficiency,
after which the crews assume ongoing layout responsibilities. Once
the layout is properly established, the field engineer transitions
layout responsibilities to the crews, while remaining available to
provide support and monitor job progress to ensure accuracy. Key
Responsibilities: Coordinate with our Project Managers to request
CAD files, control points, and control maps and ensure they are
saved in project files. Prepare and process CAD files for import
into layout equipment (Robotic Total Stations and GPS base/rovers).
Utilities: Clean up civil CAD files, bind external references, and
reduce file size. Plumbing: Export DWG files from Revit models.

file size. Upload files to Trimble Connect or save to USB device
for import into older equipment. Set up jobs in data collectors and
import CAD/control files. Set up and localize GPS base stations,
ensuring relative errors are within tolerances. Re-section total
stations, confirm accuracy within , and establish backup stakes for
future re-sectioning. Establish initial layout, offsets, and
control points for crews to begin construction activities. Stake
points for control lines and trunk lines to enable crews to begin
excavation. Provide training, guidance, and troubleshooting
assistance to crews as needed. Collaborate with general contractors
and/or surveyors to resolve discrepancies. Collaborate with general
contractors and/or surveyors to determine accurate placement of
building drawings within the site. Insert and align building
drawings (structural, architectural, and plumbing) into civil files
whenever possible. Collaborate with our BIM design manager to
assist in the annotation and production of shop drawings as needed
to support production. Maintain organized digital and field records
of layout files, points, and revisions. Maintain calibration
records on all layout equipment and ensure it gets calibrated as
needed. Qualifications: 5 years min. field experience as a
construction field engineer, surveyor, or other similar position.
Proficiency with CAD software and construction layout technology
(e.g., Trimble, Topcon, Leica). Strong understanding of
construction drawings, survey data, and field layout practices.
Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication
skills. Ability to work independently in the field while supporting
multiple crews. Commitment to safety and quality.
